You cannot retype a scanned page the way you edit a document in Word, because the letters are pixels. Four things can still be changed, and one of them is probably the edit you actually need.
A scan is a picture of a page, so its text is not editable in place. On iPhone you can correct the recognized text that OCR produces, add your own text and marks on top of the page, fix the page itself with crop and filters, and delete, reorder, or add pages. Anything beyond that means rebuilding the document elsewhere.
When a page is scanned or photographed, the result is a picture. A word on that page is a shape made of pixels, indistinguishable to the file from a smudge or a logo. There is no sentence to place a cursor into, which is why tapping a scanned paragraph never gives you a text cursor.
Text recognition changes this only partly. OCR reads the picture and produces a separate layer of recognized text — searchable, selectable, copyable — while the page image stays exactly as it was. So there are two different things you might mean by "edit a scanned document", and they have different answers: changing the recognized text, or changing what the page looks like.
This is the edit most people are after when the scanner misreads a surname, an invoice number, or a word printed in an unusual typeface. The correction lives with the document, so the fixed word is what search finds and what an export carries.
If your goal is to have a document you can search rather than edit, exporting it as a searchable PDF puts that text layer inside the file itself, so any reader can find words in it.
The other kind of edit is visual: filling a blank in a scanned form, striking through an outdated clause, initialling a paragraph, marking the line the recipient needs to read. None of this rewrites the page — it places new content over it, which is exactly how a printed page marked with a pen behaves.
Two related jobs have their own guides: filling in a form and signing a PDF. And if what you want is to remove something rather than add to it, note that covering text with a shape is not the same as removing it — see redacting a PDF and verify the exported file.
Often the problem is not a word at all — it is that the document has a blank page in the middle, the pages are in the wrong order, or one page came out crooked and grey. Those are page-level edits, and they are the quickest ones to make.

Drag the thumbnails in the page grid until the order matches the paper. Details: reorder PDF pages.
Fix the boundary so the page sits square with no desk in the frame. Details: crop a PDF and rotate pages.
Change the filter — Smart B/W drops the paper tone and leaves clean black on white. Details: improve scanned document quality.
It is worth being blunt about the boundary, because a lot of software marketing is not. Recognized text is a copy of what the page says; it is not the page. Correcting it does not reflow the original layout, change the printed letters, or let you drag a paragraph around as if it were a word processor document.
If you genuinely need a document you can restructure — change the wording, adjust the spacing, add a section — the honest route is to move the text into a real editor and rebuild it there. Recognition gets you the text without retyping; the formatting is on you. ScanLens does not export DOCX, so that step happens by copying the recognized text into Word, Pages, or Google Docs.
One more limit worth knowing: recognition cannot recover what the capture lost. If a line is out of focus, washed out by glare, or cut off at the edge, no amount of editing brings it back. Rescanning that page takes less time than fighting it.
Plenty of these searches end up on desktop tools, and sometimes that is the right answer. The trade-offs are worth knowing before you move the file across.
Opening a PDF in Word converts it into an editable document, rebuilding the layout from what it recognized. Good when you need to rework the text; expect the formatting of a complex page to come out approximate.
Uploading a scan to Drive and opening it with Docs runs recognition and gives you plain, editable text. Layout is largely discarded, which is fine when the text is what you were after.
Edits recognized text in place on the page, which is the closest thing to editing the scan itself. It is also the paid, desktop-bound option of the three.
If the edit is a correction, a signature, a filled field, or a page that needs to go, doing it on the phone avoids the round trip entirely — the document is already there, and so is the camera for a rescan.
